Warning Description: Areal Flood Warning
Warning Date: 8:10 PM EST on March 13, 2010
WarningSum:
Warning Message:The National Weather Service in Sterling Virginia has extended the
* Flood Warning for urban areas and small streams in...
Frederick County in north central Maryland
Washington County in north central Maryland
Loudoun County in northern Virginia
* until 315 am EDT Sunday
* at 804 PM EST...several area roads remain closed due to high water
from swelled creeks and streams across portions of Loudoun...
Frederick and Washington counties. Much of the heavier rainfall has
ended east of the Blue Ridge and catoctins...though more light to
moderate rain will continue over the northern Shenandoah Valley late
this evening.
A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However...all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams...highways and underpasses. Additionally...country
roads and farmlands along the banks of creeks...streams and other low
lying areas are subject to flooding.
Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding. If flooding is observed act quickly. Move up to
higher ground to escape flood waters. Do not stay in areas subject to
flooding when water begins rising.
In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to travel across
flooded roads. Find alternate routes. It takes only a few inches of
swiftly flowing water to carry vehicles away.
